Q This is a practice final exam. Use the standard essay format to transform the statistical model below into narrative form (500-word minimum). Based on the information and details below, your primary job in this essay assignment is to transform the statistical model above into narrative form. Other instructions follow. POINT OF VIEW: Compose this essay in the first-person point of view of Slobovia High School principal Mme. Esme Bouxch?re (pronounced boo’ shay’). Remember, you are writing as Mme. Bouxch?re, not about Mme. Bouxch?re. The assigned point of view must be evident in each paragraph. Without using expressions like “My name is,” Make sure to reveal your first-person given name with surname somewhere in the introductory paragraph. NOTE: As an exception to MLA guidance, the courtesy or professional titles, as identified in the model, must be used in this essay assignment, but not in the in-text or full citations. A LITTLE BACKGROUND: Slobovia High School (SHS) is the only private Christian high school in the entire country of Slobovia. The student body is comprised of students whose parents are from all walks of life. Student A, whose Arabic father is the chief executive officer of the Slobovian Commerce Bank, may be assigned to a physics class with Student B, whose Danish father cleans tables at a local bistro and sometimes fills in as a part-time chauffeur on weekends. Admittance to SHS is merit based, not socialist based. Equality at SHS focuses on opportunity, not mere human existence. To ensure merit-based equality of opportunity, admittance to SHS is determined by past school attendance and the highest scores on the annual ESAT (English Slobovia Aptitude Test). To secure standing at SHS, a student must maintain a consistent 3.4 or higher GPA. Only one semester of probation is allowed in the four-year program. Any student in Slobovia may take the ESAT at no cost with the condition that appropriate identification is presented. There is no tuition fee for students and no charge for meals that are catered by one of the finest Slobovian restaurants, Banja Luka. Each student has pre-paid accommodations to a private dormitory room in a high-rise facility with the latest technology, including a virtual private WiFi network and a well-equipped computer lab with personal booth computer stations. Additionally, when students in grades 11 and 12 enroll in dual enrollment college courses offered by the University of Slobovia, that tuition is also paid for by private funds with the condition that a 3.4 GPA is maintained at the university. Some might wonder if SHS is funded by hard-working taxpayer funds (many folks mistakenly call this government money). No! Not one penny. All of this, plus other amenities, is paid for by anonymous Christian donors and generous donations from Slobovia High School alumni and alumnae. In case there is a question, yes, athletics is an integral part of the SHS curriculum. SHS has won the last six Slobovia National Gold Rugby Championship tournaments, competing against the other seventy-two high schools in the country. Slobovia High School has a 99.8% graduation rate, and those graduates have a 100% college acceptance rate at both public and private universities. Any high school student in Slobovia may apply to attend SHS. There is no cap on student count. If the school temporarily fills the classrooms, another wing is designed, constructed, and more instructors are hired. THESIS: Based on the statistics and information provided in this assignment and your own opinion, a thesis is required. Your thesis must specifically address why you believe SHS students academically outperform all other high school students in Slobovia. Access this handout to read “A Word about the Thesis.” (Links to an external site.) In a separate paragraph for each teacher, address each teacher’s class: A paragraph for Kaganoff, a paragraph for Barréau, a paragraph for Olofsson, and a paragraph for Lindström, not necessarily in that order. Include appropriate statistics in each teacher's paragraph and how those statistics compare to the overall senior class average number of books read. Other than the four teachers and the principal, use no other names in the essay; however, each of the five given names with surnames, and their courtesy or professional titles, must be used at least once in the essay. Formal Essay 5 content may compare-contrast teachers, speculate about why one teacher’s class excelled but the other teacher’s class performance was mediocre, or anything in between. Assume that the statistics are credible and that all other factors, except for teacher presentation, are equal (reading time, types of novels, attendance, incentives, reading level of students, student demographics, teacher education and experience). The official language of the small country of Slobovia is English, so language cannot be considered as a factor. Based on the statistics provided in the model, only two percentages may be used in your essay response. Neither percentage should exceed 99%. PARAGRAPH DEVELOPMENT: In journalistic and some other styles of writing, a paragraph can be just about anything that the writer composes as long as it effectively holds the reader’s attention and sells. However, a paragraph in EH 1301 and EH 1302 must be more structured, consisting of a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. For additional help with paragraph development, study this source. (Links to an external site.) Your paragraph about Lindström must speculate about why Sergeant Lindström’s class read the most books, on average per student, than the other classes. CAUTION: The paragraphs in this essay assignment should not read like some government, fill-in-the-blanks form letter. If clarity is needed about that, call Mike Wright. Put another way, a paragraph about a teacher in this essay assignment should not mimic the paragraphs like the other three teachers. PARAGRAPH REQUIREMENT: The paragraph requirement for Formal Essay assignments is introductory paragraph, a minimum of three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. Paragraph divisions provide transition, clarity, and organization to an essay. QUOTATION REQUIREMENT: There is no direct quotation requirement for this essay; however, indirect quotations also require in-text citations. For example, when statistics are used in a paragraph from the statistical model, an in-text citation is required at the end of that paragraph. No more than one in-text citation in each paragraph shall be used. IMPORTANT: Some background about the sergeant: Sergeant Linnéa Lindström is on a unique temporary assignment to Slobovia High School. Lindström is an active duty noncommissioned officer on loan from the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command. She is also a graduate of McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and is fluent in several languages. After almost eight years as an explosive ordnance disposal technician, Sergeant Lindström received orders to teach a class of future prospects who are considering a career serving in the famed PARS (People’s Army of the Republic of Slobovia). PARS soldiers are known worldwide for their highly efficient expertise in reconnaissance, explosive ordinance, and intensive training techniques, especially assaulting an objective during hours of darkness. NOTE: Before asking why a highly skilled, educated soldier would be teaching a literature class, understand that many soldiers also possess alternative specialties and talents which may not be directly related to their primary jobs. For example, during one of this instructor’s overseas tours with the Army’s legendary 1st Armored Division (Old Ironsides), a member of my platoon received assignment orders to join the United States Military Academy (West Point) faculty and was installed as one of the elite Academy’s history professors. Use the information below to create any required in-text citation and full citation for the essay. No outside research is needed or assigned. Remember, neither Canvas, the textbook, nor Google Drive can ever be used as a source. Do not click here. This source may not be used. (Links to an external site.) When a source has multiple authors, access this example for citations. (Links to an external site.) To read an example of an essay written by Dan O’Donnell that effectively uses statistics to analyze officer-involved shootings in the United States, access this article. (Links to an external site.) The O’Donnell article is an example, not a usable source. IMPORTANT: When showing multiple statistics in an essay that obviously focuses on statistics, use numerals for the statistical data. Using numerals in such an essay simplifies the interpretation and analysis process and provides a better transition for your reader. Notice how O’Donnell uses numerals in his article. For additional guidance about writing numbers in other usage access this source. (Links to an external site.) CAUTION: Never begin a sentence with a numeral. Find a way to re-word the sentence so that the numeral can be provided but not as the first component of a sentence. When using numerals, never begin a sentence with a numeral. Refer to 2.127 in the MLA Handbook: Ninth Edition. Your essay response must be a minimum of 500 words. The Works Cited page is never included in the word count.
